Course Description:

This course is organized as two independent projects, each consisting of 3~6 participants.

Project 1: Operating System Support for TCP/IP Networking

• Develop a program for different rates, different TCP socket numbers and packet sizes of client-server transmission.
• Develop or find mechanism/tool ("probe") to monitor the processing performance (connection number, throughput, PDU number and size etc under different inputs from application space) in different locations of OS regarding packet processing, including between application and socket, between socket and TCP/IP processing, between TCP/IP processing and network delivery etc.
• Report results of different scenarios.

Project 2: Implementation and Unit Tests of a HTTP 1.0 Server

• File system based HTTP 1.0 server with thread pooling (no CGI interface nor support for content encoding; MIME and HTTP status through static configuration)
• Unit tests with coverage > 80 %
• Working with Lynx >2.8, Firefox >0.9, IE >5
• Use of available C libraries that don't concern HTTP or threading is encouraged

For both projects students are required to organize the work effectively according to the streamline of a realistic project, including  milestones (task and time allocation, deliverables) definition, implementation and revision, reports of design, implementation, test results and intermediate results etc. Each project will elect a project leader and co-leader who should be responsible for directing the overall progress of the team.
